Animal Categories:

(FOR YOUNGER STUDENTS)

  1. Locate the thirteen animals hidden in the illustration. Count them with the students to be sure they have all been found
  2. Write the name of each animal on a separate index card. Hand each card to a different student. Some research and discussion may be required for students to have the information they need to do this activity. Have students represent the animal named on the card they are holding. Sort animals by attributes. Ask the students to:

    1. Arrange themselves in order from smallest to largest animal
    2. Arrange themselves from heaviest to lightest animal
    3. Group themselves as animals that are mammals, birds, or lizards
    4. Group themselves as animals with fur, feathers, or scales (note the relationship with groups above)
    5. Group themselves as animals with antlers or no antlers
    6. Group themselves as animals that are herbivores, carnivores, or omnivores
    7. Group themselves as members of the dog family, cat family, deer family, sheep family, rodent family, bird family, or lizard family
    8. Group themselves as animals with hooves, feet, or paws
