About This Scene:

Cape Disappointment, Washington

"Cape Disappointment is located where the Columbia River flows into the Pacific Ocean in Ilwaco, Washington. It was here that Lewis and Clark reached the end of their long westward passage in 1805. For over two thousand years this area has been home to the Chinook Indians. Their population was devastated by diseases introduced by white people arriving as trappers and settlers. The Cape Disappointment Lighthouse was built in 1856, and the North Head Lighthouse, two miles away, in 1896. They stand in one of the windiest areas of the United States. In 1921, winds at North Head were clocked at 132 miles per hour before the instruments were blown away." — from Adèle & Simon in America
