Using and Making Maps:

  1. Adèle and Simon are standing with their aunt at the corner of State and Madison streets. Use this photographic map, as described in the next steps, to show the location of the building in Chicago:

  2. When the map loads, it shows a wide aerial view of the city of Chicago. The city’s location on the shore of Lake Michigan is clearly visible. The Carson, Pirie, Scott and Company Building is located at the green marker, which is under the red markers.
  3. If you zoom in, the image will bring you closer and closer to the intersection of State and Madison. At the closest level, people, buses, and cars are clearly visible, as is the rounded corner of the Carson, Pirie, Scott and Company Building.
  4. Use Google Maps to locate your school.
  5. Have students draw a map of the school and surrounding area. Include other nearby buildings, vehicles, trees, and themselves.
